The speed of the wind outside was making it difficult for the people walking down the street (not sure I'd do that so maybe they were locals - or maybe tourists not aware of the risk).
The day was very uneventful because we spent the day inside. We were grateful for the snacks we'd bought the night before so we could just graze and chill watching the 'cable'. So Disney Channel and Nickolodeon has been playing non stop since sunrise. While the girls watched tv, I pretty much slept most of the day.
While I was awake I spent time watching the weather channel and blizzard pretty much took all the coverage time. There was so many interesting facts that I heard. Like this is the 3rd highest covering of snow in NYC since records have been kept since 1869. The Mayor announced that all vehicles (other than emergency vehicles) were to be off NYC roads from 2.30pm or they would be fined. Over 6000 flights were canceled and all other transportation had ceased or on modified schedules. Basically bringing the city to a standstill.
Sadly I also heard that about 7 people had lost their lives shovelling snow. So tragic.
I periodically got up to see what was happening outside and the snow and wind were relentless. I saw massive snow ploughs, a NYPD car bogged in the snow, doormen outside hotels shovelling snow and scattering ice on the 'sidewalk'. It's such a new experience to watch this all happen.
The girls loved the opportunity to get out amongst it, especially Boston who was experiencing snow for the first time. And what a place to do it!
Jamei didn't anticipate the softness of the piles of snow and giggled her way through to the road where she was able to walk more freely. The snow ploughs had made a massive build up along the kerbside. Boston jumped into one of these piles too. All that was missing was a rendition of "Do you want to build a snowman".
I shed a tear of disbelief as I watched the girls laugh and play in the snow with the flakes touching the small part of my face that was exposed. Was a very surreal moment indeed.
At about 10pm Jamei and I were a bit peckish but with many places shut, or too far to get to, we remembered our trusty Subway was 24 hours so grabbed a warm treat to tie us over till the morning.
I hope I can sleep tonight. Tomorrow is our last day in NYC. Hoping it's a good one!
